A physician before the War (Graduate of Oglethorpe College & Medical College Of GA in Augusta), he was originally elected Captain, Company B, of the 3rd Georgia Infantry on 26 April 1861. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in December 1862 to rank from 1 July 1862. He was wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia on 1 July 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded also at Sharpsburg, in the combat in the Sunken Road, and taken prisoner by men of the 132nd Pennsylvania, according to their after-action report.The remainder of the War: He was detailed away to Augusta, Georgia on account of wounds 4 May 1864, and retired on disability on the 16th of that month.
He was the attending physician of his brother, Frank LeConte Nisbet, death in 1879.
He first married Martha A. Dennis Grimes on March 15, 1853. Their children were:

Later after the death of his wife, he married Martha Antoinette Dennis on November 01, 1873 in Mitchell, AL. She was the first cousin of his first wife. She was also the widow of Reuben's younger brother Robert Henry Nisbet. Their only child together was:
