Joseph Anthony Michaels, 81, of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 24, in McGuire Veterans Hospital Richmond. He was born in Swoyersville, son of the late Walter and Mary Michaels. Mr. Michaels was a graduate of Drexel University, with a bachelor of science degree in commerce and engineering, and received a master's degree in education and guidance from Bucknell University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Michaels resided in Vernon, N. J., for 38 years and was employed by Sparta, N. J., High School as a teacher and coach for more than 30 years. He resided in Virginia since , his retirement in 1988. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Miriam Vree-land; daughters, Melinda Stew art, Richmond; Patricia Harris, Stafford, Va.; Kristian V, Richmond; Kevin V, Virginia Beach, Va.; Kerry V, Union, N. J; Jan-V, Dingmans Ferry; 14 grandchildren; brothers, John, Wilkes-Barre; Walter, Stackshiiiny; Louis, Swoyersville. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m., in Holy Name-St Mary's Church, Swoyersville.
