The funeral for Roy Afraid Of Lightning, 75, a medicine man and Sun Dance leader, will be Thursday, June 28, at the H.V. Johnston Cultural Center in Eagle Butte. Charity Hill, Frank O'Lodge and Byron Buffalo will officiate. Traditional services will be conducted by Stanley Moran, Richard Red Elk and Harvey Eagle Horse. Roy's family and friends will provide special music.

Burial will be at the UCC Cemetery in Bridger under the direction of Oster Funeral Home of Mobridge.

There will be an all night wake service starting at 6 p.m., MDT, this evening, Wednesday, at the Cultural center preceded by family and friends gathering at 5 p.m. at the 4-mile junction to follow in procession to the center.

Roy died of cancer on Thursday, June 21, 2007, at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Eagle Butte.

He was born Jan. 1, 1932, to Moses and Amelia Afraid Of Lightning. He attended school in Bridger and at the Old Cheyenne Agency. Later, he went to Electrical School in California. He worked as a construction worker, as a male nurse in Faith, S.D., and as a custodian and bus driver in Red Scaffold.

Roy enjoyed rodeos and competed in bareback. During his later years he enjoyed traveling to powwows. He taught his grandsons and many others to sing traditional Lakota music. As a medicine man and Sun Dance leader, he helped all across the nation and in many other countries. Most of his life was spent in Red Scaffold, moving to Eagle Butte more recently.

Survivors are his children, Roletta Afraid Of Lightning Pretty Weasel of Bismarck, N.D., Charlene Afraid Of Lightning, Anita Afraid Of Lightning and Ronald Circle Bear of Rapid City, Linda Circle Bear-Green of Hill City, Alvina Circle Bear of Eagle Butte; his adopted children; his stepchildren, Marie, Delores, Gloria, James and Oris Bear Stops; 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; sisters, Ester Hale, Shirley Dupris and his brother, James Afraid Of Lightning, all of Eagle Butte; and numerous nieces, nephews, adopted nieces and nephews and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Mexican Circle Bear; his second wife, Catherine Circle Bear; his parents, brother Johnny and his twin brother Raymond; sisters, Vera Dupris, Mary Herreld, Regina Lone Eagle and Magdalene and Edith; his children Carol Ann and Esterlita; and grandchildren Jeremy Lee Circle Bear, Tracy Cottier and baby girl Circle Bear.

Casketbearers for his funeral will be Aaron Circle Bear, Austin Circle Bear, Duane Bissonette, Austin Bissonette, Cody Thomas, David Dupris Jr., Ryan Afraid Of Lightning, Troy Sitting Crow and Kelly Dupris.
