In 1851 he was living in Stanley Street in Holyhead with his parents and two older siblings. His father was a printer’s compositor.
He joined the army on the 19th of August 1865. He became a Band Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion the King’s Regiment.
He married Hannah Georgina Crimmins (nee Stanford) on the 8th of May 1877 at Aldershot. They had two children. A daughter Annie and a son William Hugh Sydney Jones who became a Musical Director.
In 1881 they were living in Stoke in Surrey.
They were stationed at Blackdown Barracks when Hannah died on the 3rd of June 1905. Hannah was buried at Frimley on the 5th of June 1905.
William was discharged from the army on the 19th of August 1905.
William was living at West Derby in Liverpool when he died on the 27th of November 1930. His ashes were placed in his wife’s grave.
