Mary Evelyn Deffinbaugh (nee Thatcher), 92, passed away on July 4, 2019 at her home in Billings, MT.
Mary is survived by her children, June Martin (Gary), DeeDee Ison (Lee), Lyle Deffinbaugh (Deana) and Linda Reynolds (Don); 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Bill, and granddaughters, Amie and Jailah Rose.
Mary was born May 3, 1927 in Rapelje, MT. She attended high school in Park City, MT and Inglewood, CA (class of ’46) before earning a degree in Interior Design from Woodbury University (class of ’48). In her younger years, Mary worked at Bullocks Wilshire (Los Angeles), Hart-Albin (Billings), as well as the Ryegate Café and Duffy’s Grocery Store (Ryegate), before teaching classes with the local art business, “Different Strokes.” Known for her artistic talents, Mary taught art classes, won several awards at the Yellowstone County Fair, and has displayed her work in various locations, including the Roundup Museum. She was also a 10-year 4-H member in Golden Valley County.
With a strong interest in politics, Mary was an active member and Vice President of the Montana Democratic Women’s Club, being named “Woman of the Year” in 1994. She also served on the Montana County Election and Draft Boards and participated in the Montana Farmers Union.
Mary loved spending time with her family, promoting physical activity, and traveling. Faith also played an important role in her life; she was an active member of the Ryegate Methodist Church for more than 25 years, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.

Services are planned for Friday, July 19th at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel at St. John's Chapel Court and on Saturday, August 3rd at 11 a.m. at the Beaver Creek Cemetery South of Lewistown, Montana.
