In early life a volunteer at the burning of the Gaspee in June 1772: he joined the Army in 1775, and was successively promoted, until in 1778, he was appointed Deputy Quarter Master General, of the Army in Rhode Island.
He sustained, at different periods of his after life, several high civil offices, which he discharged with fidelity to his constituents, and with honor to himself.
He survived his ten children, leaving in his old age, a widow only, whose affection erects this stone, sacred to his memory.
