James Soyer Thurman was raised in the mountains near Lynchburg. In March of 1941, he joined the United States Army and deployed in support of the European Theater of WWII. James served in the 411th Infantry where he saw conflict and combat across Europe. His unit was responsible for the liberating of concentration camps and crucial in the capture of Innsbruck, Austria. James returned after the war to the US and married, and had three sons, one who passed away in infancy. In 1947 he married Thelma Alice Tanner and had three more children, losing one daughter at only six weeks old. James entered the service again from 1961 to 1965. He was a talented carpenter and expert cabinet maker. Thelma and James were separated at the passing of Thelma in 1995. Memorial service was held at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Colonial Heights, VA on January 6, 2018. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
