UPDATED 13 AUGUST 2022:

The Cemetery Book for Vernon Township, Wash. Co., IN, of the Wash. Co. Hist. Society, dated 2003, gives Samuel Burr Sherwood and Charity Hull as her parents. The handwritten original predecessor of this document (1923 by Miss Lena VanCleave and Mrs. Harvey Morris)does not offer information concerning her parents. It does mention that Burr Banks and Abigail are "Mrs. O.K.[Oscar Kingsley] Hobbs' great grandfather and great grandmother." Miss VanCleave's handwritten document was later typed-up I believe by Mrs. Roscoe Zink and Mrs. Eugene Burgess August 15, 1963. I do not have a copy of the page for Burr and Abigail Banks [it can be found in the Stevens Library] so I don't know if any reference was made to Abigail's parents in that typed document. I should add that the 2003 edition of the Cemetery Book is a 2nd edition and that the first edition was published in 1988 and "an effort has also been made to add or revise information to the entries in the first edition through added research. All information was gathered through the many sources available in the Historical Society library, the court house, and numerous interviews with descendants of the families buried there....-Clara Marie (Shanks) Burns" The bottom line is that presently I do not know the actual source of the assertion in the 2003 Cemetery Book that Samuel Burr Sherwood and Charity Hull are Abigail's parents.

However, I believe the Cemetery Book is in error as to Abigail's parents.

New information leads me to the conclusion that Abigail Sherwood's parents are NOT Samuel Burr Sherwood and Charity Hull. I was recently provided with "Sherwood Group Sheets, Vol 1 and 2" compiled by Donald F. Notley, Tulsa, Oklahoma dated 1963 by Sherwood family researcher Gene Chamberlain. Those papers show a different Abigail Sherwood as the daughter of Samuel Burr Sherwood and Charity Hull. The documentation indicates to me that this other Abigail is more likely their daughter. Among other things, this other Abigail named one of her 8 children "Samuel Burr Sherwood Jessup" (Her husband was Charles Jessup.)

I now believe that the father of Abigail is Eliphalet Sherwood, b. abt 1758, d. at Greenfield, CT, on 22 Oct 1831 ae. 73. I believe Abigail Sherwood's mother is Abigail Sherwood (Sherwood is her maiden name). Eliphalet married the latter on 7 Dec 1779. His wife died 24 Dec 1844, ae. 84 years and 8 months.

According to the History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield by Donald Lines Jacobus dated 1930, Vol II, Part II, page 847, Eliphalet's children are Charity, Uria, Harriet and Abigail. This source provides that this Abigail married "________ Banks".

This source also provides that Eliphalet's daughter Harriet, (who I believe to be Abigails's sister), married a Samuel Rowland. According to a letter dated 3 June 1825 from Jeremiah Rowland to his cousin Samuel Rowland, Burr Banks was hoping to get a loan from Samuel for his farm. Bank Burr's wife (Abigail Sherwood of this Memorial) had just died. The letter references Mr. Bank's grief. If Harriet was indeed Abigail's sister, then this would be a loan from Abigail's brother-in-law to her husband just shortly after Abigail's death.

The Jacobus source mentioned above, also states that the distribution of Eliphalet's estate was made, 24 Dec 1832, to the widow, the 3 surviving children and the heirs of Abigail Banks.

Based upon the above information, I believe that the parents of Abigail Sherwood, wife of Burr Banks, were Eliphalet Sherwood and Abigail Sherwood.

Again, I welcome any information.
