Catherine was the daughter of Levi Erb (1811-1893) and Mary Erb, née Wissler (1815-1872). She and her twin brother, Simon, were born soon after her parents emigrated from Pennsylvania to the Waterloo region, Ontario. (See biographical notes in the Levi Erb memorial. )

Catherine lived for only one day, and Simon, eight days.
