Five months ago today, Master Trooper David Rich was gunned down along US 24 when he stopped to help what he thought was a stranded motorist. The gunman then turned his weapon on himself. Wednesday afternoon, a memorial service took place to remember Trooper Rich. Nicole Pence was there.

Nicole Pence: "Written in this memorial bulletin, Trooper David Rich was on his way home from a job he loved, to a family he loved, in a community he loved, when he was killed in the line of duty. Today friends and family honored the fallen hero."

Captain Robert Rich/Brother: "For every evil act committed in this world, a thousand other people are doing good things."

A husband, a father, a son, and a good friend, it's here at the newly dedicated "Master Trooper David Rich Memorial Park", many in Wabash will visit to remember the life of the 18-year veteran of the Indiana State Police who served at the Peru post.

Jan Maller/Best Friend: "Hopefully people in 10,20,50 or even a hundred years from now, ask about the memorial site honoring Dave. They won't reflect so much on how Dave's life ended, but rather on how he lived his life."

A man who devoted his life to public service, it's been difficult for his family and the community to come to terms with the trooper's tragic death.

Jan Maller/Best Friend: "Although David's death has been overwhelming, causing great pain and sorrow, if you believe in God and the promise of Jesus your relationship with Dave isn't over, it has just begun."

For every holiday season to come, the giant Christmas tree towering above the memorial, will be covered with blue lights. Blue is the symbol of peace and a reminder of the sacrifice officers make across the country while serving their communities.

Captain Robert Rich/Brother: "He truly, truly, believed in helping people."

Nicole Pence: "The legacy of Master Trooper David Rich will indeed live on. The State is also talking about naming a portion of US 24 after the trooper."
