Abel appears to have joined the 11th Hussars (mounted soldiers) as a groom before he was convicted in August 1843 in Liverpool of an unspecified crime and sent to Pentonville Prison (usually reserved for petty criminals) where he trained as a tailor. He was one on the Pentonvillian Exiles, sent to Australia as a "free man", conditional on never returning to England. He was transported on the "Stratheden arriving at Port Phillip 27th January 1846. Abel joined the Mounted Police at Geelong and was appointed a Sergeant, presumably on the basis of his experience in the Hussars!
