Robert served as a Steward, S.S. W.D. Anderson, U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II.

He resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

The duties of the Steward was to supervise the maintenance and operation of the galley and living and eating quarters of the officers and crew. He ordered the supplies for the department and planned the meals. It was also his job to keep a record of all meals served on board.

The S.S. W.D. Anderson, unescorted and unarmed, was enroute from Corpus Christi, TX to Philadelphia when she was torpedoed by " German U-504 " about 12 miles northeast of Jupiter Light, Florida. Eight officers and 27 crewmen were lost as the ship soon sank with only one survivor.

Robert was declared "Missing in Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded the Merchant Seaman's Mariners Medal with a combat star.
