The son of Peter and Margaret Stewart, Peter was a well known and promising Queensland Cricketer, when he enlisted in the A.I.F. on 24 June 1940.

On 5 April 1941, whilst the Battalion was training at Bathurst, New South Wales, he featured prominently, as a member of the winning team, in an inter Battalion Cricket Match against the 2/30 Battalion.

He was selected as a member of "B" Force, and was among the Officers transferred to Kuching, when the Japanese discovered an Australian Officer involved in the underground movement. The Japanese feared the remaining Officers organizing a rebellion among the other prisoners.

He died of Berri Berri and is buried at Labuan Cemetery.

He is also commemorated at The Australian War Memorial at Canberra and the Australian Ex-P.O.W. Memorial Wall at Ballarat, Victoria.
