George was the next to the youngest son of William Blenkarn and Betty Goodrick, born in the little village of Terrington, Yorkshire, England in 1805. This was the year that the first shop in London was lighted by gas in Piccadilly, then followed street lighting in 1807 on Whitecross Street. As far as is known from the church register he had three brothers and one sister. It is not known just when, but George and his 3 brothers removed themselves to London, maybe around mid 1820's. George was a Deacon at the Holy Mount Chapel in the Parish of St. Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex and this chapel was formed in 1777. George was a non-conformist and was associated with the congregational church. It is never easy to be a nonconformist, thus it is quite evident that George had a strong calling from God and found his spiritual life growing in this church. In the history written of his son Edward, it is made mention "the home where George raised his family was very devout to the Word of the Lord."

George married Caroline Smith, the daughter of William Smith, secretary to the Bank of London. Her mother's name was Sarah Keyes. George was a commercial traveler at the time of his death, but was listed as a linen draper when his son, William Thomas, was born in 1832. He lived a much different life than his farming tenant ancestors. Some way, some how, George and Caroline saw to it that their children were educated. Few were educated and the masses remained illiterate, but by monetary or influence or both, the managed to raise this family into the educated populace.

George and Caroline had six children:

George Smith
William Thomas
Thomas Edward
Frederick Richard
Alexander Charles
Mary Ann
