--Mrs. Joseph H. Himes Dies; Was Noted for Social Welfare Work--

Mrs. Joseph H. Himes, socially prominent wife of one of Washington's large property holders, died today at Frederick (Md.) City Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Himes was well known here for her welfare work, being particularly interested in the welfare of children and mothers.

Her husband was one of the founders of Group Hospitalization, Inc., and has served as its president for 18 years. He owns the Transportation Building and the old Draper Building now being torn down at Seventeenth and K streets N.W.

Former Representative
Mr. Himes is a former member of the House of Representatives from Ohio. It was after his service in Congress that he and Mrs. Himes settled in Washington.

Mrs. Himes was born in California. The former Eilleen Canfield, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Canfield. Her father was a pioneer oil prospector in California and well known for his philanthropies.

As a girl, Mrs. Himes came to Washington to attend National Park Seminary at Forest Glen. She was married in New York and went to live in Canton, Ohio, until her husband was elected to Congress.

Aided Community Chest
She was affiliated with the Community Chest from its inception in 1928 and took part in many of its fund-raising campaigns. She served on its Budget Committee, the special gifts unit and as a trustee.

She was a former president of the Children's Country Home Board and served on the board of Columbia Hospital.

When the family gave up its Washington residence and decided to make historic Prospect Hall outside Frederick its year-round home, Mrs. Himes organized the American Women's Voluntary Services in Frederick during World War II.

Within a month after she personally leased a small house in Frederick for AWVS, 250 volunteers were enlisted.

Son, Two Daughters Survive.
Mrs. Himes was the mother of a son, Canfield Himes, and two daughters, Miss Marilynn Himes and Mrs. John B. Wogan, jr. Miss Himes recently became the first woman to get a certificate from the Civil Aeronautics Administration to fly helicopters. Miss Himes is president of the Tail-Waggers' Club and presented its television program. Mrs. Wogan's husband, a West Point graduate, is a lieutenant serving in Korea.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, but the service is expected to be held in Frederick Saturday.
