Murder Victim. The wife of oil tycoon Charles Canfield. She was shot to death on the front porch of her Los Angeles home by Morris Buck, a former family coachman, who had demanded a $2600 loan and had been rebuffed. Her husband publicly declared, "I'll see him hang if it costs me a million dollars". Although questions were raised about Buck's mental state during the investigation and trial, he was convicted and executed at San Quentin in 1907. Charles Canfield subsequently established several charities in Chloe's memory.
