Mother Catherine Jones Reed affectionately known as ‘Ma Gal’ was 90 when she transitioned from this life on Tuesday morning, January 22, 2019, in her home, surrounded by family. Catherine was born to the late Walter Jones and Pearl Parker Jones on Saturday, April 14, 1928. She joined First Baptist Church decades ago and remained an active member until her health declined. But more importantly, she had a personal relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. After her schooling, Catherine married the late Wilbur Reed, Sr. and became a homemaker. Catherine (known to many as Ms. Cat) and her husband Wilbur Sr. had twelve children, six boys, and six girls. Ethel Mae Tyler (second oldest sibling) and Queen E. Reed (baby girl) preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy Bolling and Hester Bates and brothers John Thomas Jones and Walter Jones, Jr.
Ma gal was a gentle soul who loved her family and considered them to be her pride and joy; her favorite times were spent laughing with her children and grandchildren. Catherine loved to sport her beautiful suits and hats, especially in her favorite colors- red and black. She was a humble matriarch who was always ready to help others and did so with a smile. Ms. Cat was most frequently found sitting at her kitchen table working crossword puzzles, making her famous homemade biscuits, picking salad, talking
on the phone or ready to slice anyone a piece of her renowned pineapple cake.

Catherine leaves to cherish her memory, her children Carol Reed Washington (James), Fay Reed Jones, Wilbur Reed, Jr., Leroy Reed, Sr., Thomas Lee Reed, Sr. (Mary), Milton Reed, Sr., Gladys Reed Curley
(Jerald, Sr.), Catherine Reed Prosise (Elvis), James Reed, Sr. (Nicole) and George Reed, Sr., 28
grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren, three sisters Thelma Hill, Barbara
Jones and Stella Jones, 5 nieces, 3 nephews, and a host of cousins, friends, church family, and community supporters. She will be missed by many but her legacy lives on in all of us.

A homegoing service will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Jarratt, Virginia. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of Johnson Funeral Home.
