Audrey Denton Monk, 91, of Raleigh, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2019 following a period of declining health. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Ima Garrett, husbands Allan B. Denton and Joseph H. Monk, her sister Betty G. Johnson and her stepson Danny Monk.
She is survived by her four children; son Randall Denton, son Allen Denton and wife Mary Ann Denton, daughter Mary Ann Mahoney and husband Michael, and son Joseph Monk and wife Annette. She is also survived by her grandchildren Amanda Alderman and husband Adam, Nate Denton and wife Kristen, Jacob Stoudenmire and wife Kara, Aaron Stoudenmire and wife Adrienne, Kurt Stoudenmire and wife Maureen, Brooks Denton-Zimmerman and wife Martha, Erin Terretti and husband Sean, Michael Mahoney, Chris White, Jody Monk and wife Betsy, Kevin Monk and wife Stephanie. She is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren.
Audrey was born in Elizabeth City, NC, and moved to Raleigh with her parents when she was nine years old. She graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1946 and, soon after graduation, was married to Allan Denton. Together they built their log home that Audrey tirelessly maintained until her passing.
For many years, Audrey was employed by the Employment Security Commission as a key punch operator and Overnite Transportation as an administrative assistant. After her retirement, she enjoyed travelling, learning Spanish and spending more time with her grandchildren, who lovingly call her Granny. She also enjoyed decorating her home, gardening, playing cards and games, loved shoes, poetry, reading and music and she rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy. However, her favorite way to spend time was in the company of her family and friends.
Audrey embodied grace, beauty, kindness and wisdom. She has made a lasting impression on all who met and knew her. A long life well lived, she will live forever in the hearts of us all.
A visitation will be held on June 24, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Montlawn Funeral Home, 2911 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh, with a graveside service to follow at noon in Montlawn Memorial Park. The family would love for you to join them at Chuy's at North Hills in Raleigh for lunch following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Transitions Life Care of Raleigh, or the church or charity of your choosing.
