Cleveland Powell, who operated a bar and grill in Overbrook that featured weekend jazz shows and other entertainment, an Army veteran of the Korean War and devoted family man, was shot to death on the Fourth of July at his home in Overbrook. He was 77. Police believe the motive was robbery. Cleve, as he was called, was born in Whittaker, N.C., to Walter and Ruth Powell. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, and then moved to Philadelphia.
He worked for a time as a truck driver, then operated a number of bars throughout Philadelphia. His "happy-go-lucky personality" endeared him to his customers and everyone he met, his family said. Cleve was an outstanding cook and, in addition to music, he lent his culinary skills to his Cleve's Bar and Grill, at 63rd Street and Lancaster Avenue. He hosted many parties and special events.
He was a family man who took pride in the accomplishments of his children. He recently celebrated a grandson's christening. Cleve is survived by a son, Eric Gleason; three daughters, Kim Carter, Tamara Powell Jackson and Inde Harrison; a brother, Walter, and a sister, Lena Mae Mitchell. He was predeceased by another brother, Gene Powell.
