THREE DESPERADOES KILLED..
Escaped Prisoners From Del Norte Killed by the Officers. Del Norte, Colo., March 17.—Last Thursday night Tom Gallagher, John McCann and Charles Harris escaped from the Rio Grande county jail by overpowering Deputy Sheriff Renner, who was left bound and gagged behind them. Harris feigned illness and was lying on the floor of his cell groaning when Deputy Shereff Renner carried him some medicine. He was in a stooping position when Gallagher jumped upon his back to force him down, and at the same time the alleged sick man seized him by the neck. He was quickly secured and disarmed, McCann holding the pistol in apprehension of Sheriff Hocker's appearance, while the villains deliberately prepared for flight. Their escape was not discovered for some hours and Sheriff Hocker then promptly scoured the country in all directions for traces of them. Deputy Renner discovered their camp on Saturday night near the head of Old Woman's creek just over the line of Saguache county, and at daybreak yesterday morning it was surrounded. His sudden demand for their surrender was answered by shots from the revolver which they took from him. His rifle sent a bullet through McCann's body, and Harris and Gallagher started to run. Finding their capture impossible, other shots were fired by the posse and both men were killed. The bodies were left where they fell to • await the action of the authorities of Saguache county. The coroner will probably hold an inquest to-day and bury the remains. All of the men were desperate characters and there is a feeling of relief over their tragic ending. □Monte Vista, Colo., March 17.—[Special.}—Great excitement prevails over the killing of the jail breakers. Twenty men went to the inquest to protect Deputy Renner, supposed to be in danger from the friends of the slain. Renner • has many friends here.
