He was born in Dumfries, coming to Gloucester as a young man. He was working as a Draper when he married Maria Avery on 1st August 1843 at St John the Baptist Gloucester. The census records him as a Cabinet Maker and furniture dealer, but he was mainly an expert Antique Dealer. His first shop was in Northgate Street, then he moved to 154 Westgate Street before moving in 1877 into St Nicholas House, Westgate Street, adjoining St Nicholas Church. He became well established, selling antiques and curios, with a good reputation for his knowledge and integrity. He also had an interest in Astronomy writing several papers on the subject and becoming a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society on 8th January 1897 despite having the reputation of being an ardent believer of the flat Earth theory!
He lived at 130, London Road Gloucester.
They had nine children. His obituary states that on his death "The deceased leaves a family of four sons and four daughters. The former are Mr. Edward Johnston, Mr William James Johnston-Vaughn (a member of the Gloucester City Council, who added Vaughn from his first wife's surname) Mr Bruce Johnston of Croydon (father of Mr Leonard Johnston, manager of the Gloucester Light Railways) and Mr. Duncan Johnston of Johannesburg. The daughters are Miss Johnston, Mrs. Conway-Jones, Mrs, George J Abell (Ledbury) and Mrs Samuel Gibbins." These were given in birth order so the daughters are Maria Johnston, Clara Felicia Conway-Jones, Hannah Lewis Abell and Agnes Mary Gibbins.
Towards the end of his life he was still bright and in good health. Before his death he was suffering from bronchitis but only being confined to his house by a bout of flu, starting about a month before his death. He was still up and about until three days before his death. He died at midnight on the Thursday.
He was interred at the cemetery on Monday 14th January 1907. The service started at 12 noon in his residence and proceeded to the cemetery. It was taken by Rev. Rice from Brunswick Road Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Luce from St Nicholas Church. The Coffin plate gave his dates of birth and death.
