Émilien was born in the former parish of St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette (now part of the Loretteville neighbourhood of Quebec City). His parents were Jacques Martel, a farmer/grower ('cultivateur') and Angélique Gonthier. His godparents were Émilien Gonthier & Louise Martel.

1871 Canada Census:
Émilien was 10 years old, living at home in St. Ambroise, with his father who was a widower.

1881 Canada Census: Émilien was 20, single, and living in the St. Roch South ward of Quebec City. He was a grower. He married Diana Drolet on 13 June 1887 in Quebec City.

1891 Canada Census: Age 29, he lived in the St. Jean ward of Quebec City. Diana was 23. He worked as a tailor specialized in leather goods ('tailleur de cuir'). The couple had 3 children: Lorenzo, 3; Blanche, 2 and Roméo, 4 months.

In the 1901 Census he was 38 years old living in the St Jean ward and working as a shoemaker-tailor ('cordonnier-tailleur'). Diana was 33; they had 6 children: Lorenzo, 12; Blanche, 11; Yvonne, 9; Alexandre, 5; Fernande, 2 and Germaine, 11 months. Roméo does not appear in this Census.

Diana died 16 October 1908 at age 40. On 25 April 1910 Émilien married Marie Laura Robitaille. The 1921 Canada Census shows the couple had a son, Paul Henri, born ca 1916.
