Wright, Clinton (c1783-1818), served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Light Dragoons of the U.S. Army; born in Maryland, commissioned a Coronet on 19 Jan 1813, transferred to 2nd Light Dragoons on 29 Jan 1813, promoted to 3rd Lieutenant on 29 Apr 1813, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 19 Apr 1814, transferred to Light Dragoons on 12 May 1814 and transferred to 4th Infantry on 17 May 1815. Maj. Clinton Wright, the assistant adjutant-general assigned to the staff of Maj. Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gainesand, died on 24 Feb 1818 when a keelboat struck a sawyer and piled into the rocks of the Flint River near today's Newton, Georgia. "Genl. Gains … lost his Asst. Adjt. Genl. & two soldiers drowned…" Clinton, third son of Gov. Robert Wright, was a very brave and fearless man, priding himself upon his military skill. He had charge of a recruiting station at Centreville for the U.S. Army. On 4th of September 1812, he left Centreville for Niagara in full uniform, at the head of 30 dragoons. He fought a duel with a French officer during the Canadian War. Friends tried to reconcile them but Wright insisted that the fight should go on. On the second fire the Frenchman was killed. Mr. Wright boasted that he would "die with his armor on,",which he did in endeavoring to swim the St. Lawrence River. All of his brothers served in the War of 1812 except for one brother who was too young.
