Mrs. Norcross became homesick and left her husband, at which time Mr. Norcross asked Anna to remain and "keep house." "No, sir, I will see you in the bottomless pit first!" she reportedly replied. She was taken into the family of Esquire Peters, "where young Richard Aldrich found her and easily persuaded her to become his wife."
