William was the 1st of 4 children (all sons) born of William Slack and his wife Phebe. William's siblings were: Joseph (1754-1756), Jesse (b. 1756), and Joseph (b. 1757).

William married, June 16, 1774 at Fitchburg, Worcester County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Alice Wood (1753-1833) by whom he had at least 3 children (1 son and 2 daughters): Millicent (1775-1820), William (1777-1855), and Lucy (1787-1863).

In April, 1775 (formerly on May 1st), William, then a resident of Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts, enlisted as a Private in Captain James Burt's Company, Colonial Asa Whitcomb's Massachusetts Regiment. During this enlistment, William is listed on a number of pay orders and muster rolls dated at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

After serving the 1st 8 months of the Revolutionary War, William enlisted on January 1, 1776 in Captain Morse's Company, Colonel William Prescotts's Massachusetts 9th Continental Line Regiment, General John Sullivan's Brigade. Colonel Prescott's Regiment remained with the main Continental Army. Following the British departure from Boston, in April, it moved to New York City. By November the Regiment was at the Hudson River Highlands in New York State. After fully serving out his one year term, William was Honorably Discharged in January, 1777 at the Hudson River Highlands.

By November, 1777, William was residing in Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont where his son William was born. In 1787, Lucy, William's daughter, was also born in Windsor.

William was enumerated in the 1800 US Census of Plymouth, Windsor County, Vermont as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male 45 years and over, 1 Free White male 16 thru 25, 2 Free White Males 10 thru 15, 1 Free White Male under 10, 1 Free White Female 45 years and over, and 1 Free White Female 10 thru 15.

In the 1810 US Census of Plymouth, William was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male 45 and over, 1 Free White Male 16 thru 25, 1 Free White Male 10 thru 15, and 1 Free White Female 45 and over.

In the 1820 US Census of Strafford, Orange County, Vermont, William was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male of 45 and upwards, and 1 Free White Female of 45 and upwards. In July, 1820, William declared that his occupation has been farming and shoemaking.
