In late May 1922, Oliver killed a hound that belonged to his neighbor, Irvie Eberhart, after it killed some of his sheep. A heated argument developed and Eberhart struck Farris with his fist, causing him to fall back on the pavement and fracture his skull. Farris died from his injuries and was laid to rest in Enloe Cemetery near Russellville.
On June 1, 1922, the Eldon Advertiser described Farris as "a peaceful, law-abiding citizen and his untimely death is a warning to us all to try and subdue our passions ..."
Eberhart was fined $500 by a jury in November 1922 for the death of Farris, claiming Farris spat in his face and that he believed he was raising his hand to strike him.
Farris' wife died in 1939 and is buried alongside him. Irvie Eberhart died in 1951 and is also interred in Enloe Cemetery.
