Sherrill Brown, 92, of Longview, died Aug. 29, 2003, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born April 29, 1911, in North Carolina, to Rufus and Elizabeth Brown and attended North Carolina schools. He moved to the local area in 1944.
Mr. Brown logged for Weyerhaeuser in Vader and Ryderwood before working in the cabinet division of Long Bell & International Paper from 1944 until retiring in 1966. He wrote and published hundreds of gospel songs, one as recently as this Spring. He sang for many years with The Ambassadors quartet. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed his grandchildren's activities. He was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church and the senior adult choir "Joy Singers."
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Del McGhee of Longview; two granddaughters, Karen Vaughn of Olympia and Sheri Johnson of Port Orchard, Wash.; and two great-granddaughters.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife Sept. 5, 1995; an infant son; an infant daughter; four brothers, Claude, Will, Ted and Hexter Brown; and a sister, Bess Mathis.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Pastors Kevin White and Bills Wells will officiate. Burial will take place at Longview Memorial Park. The viewing will be held from noon to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
