He fought in the Civil War, serving in Company D 47th Indiana Infantry from 15 November 1861 to 23 October 1865. He fought in battles at: Riddles Landing, MO; Brown's Plantation, MS; Port Gibson, MS; Champion's Hill, MS; Vicksburg, MS; Jackson, MS; Alexandria, LA; and Spanish Fort, AL.
