Dr. Hailu Abatena, 77, passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 at his home in Virginia Beach, VA, following a lengthy illness. He was born on April 22, 1939 in Gimbi, Ethiopia as the youngest child to Gelane Kitesa and Abatena Jammo. He was a retired professor that devoted his life yearning for knowledge, an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Syracuse Basketball, as well as a devoted father who loved his family and friends. He is survived by his sister Adisse Abatena, his former wife of 27 years, Atsede Waktole; along with their two children, son Wakgira and daughter Ayane. Let God bless his soul and provide his family and friends the strength to accept what is hard to accept. A celebratory memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Friday, September 2, 2016 at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N.
