3535 Corporal A Mann, 1st Battalion the South Staffordshire Regiment. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Aurania on 18 Mar 1900, and arrived at the Cape about 9 Apr 1900. Along with the 1st Worcestershire, 2nd Royal West Kent, and 2nd Manchester, they formed the 17th Brigade under Major General Boyes. The battalion was not engaged in any big battle, and, like the rest of Rundle's force, had few opportunities of earning distinction. They were deployed in the north-east of the Orange River Colony for a long time, enduring considerable hardship and had to be constantly vigilant. Corporal Mann died of disease at No 10 General Hospital, Norvalspont, Cape Province. He was buried in Colesberg British Military Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment Boer War memorial in Lichfield Cathedral, The Close, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/259228/).
