Author. Linguist. Wrote the book, "The First American: His Homes and His Households", a biography about President George Washington. She busily wrote and completed this book during the spring and summer of 1897, at Mount Vernon, before her accident in September, when she fell from a horse and injured her spine. It was published posthumously in 1899. She graduated from Hamner Hall-Diocesan School for Girls in Montgomery, Alabama, receiving a number of honors, one of which was for delivering her Valedictorian speech in French. She graduated from St. Agnes School in Albany, New York as Valedictorian, delivering her speech in German. It was written of her, that, "From her earliest years a reader of thoughtful books, she rarely spoke of them; a good linguist, she seldom admitted it. She seemed to prefer the reputation of a graceful woman of the world to that of a person of great intellectual force." The daughter of Hilary Herbert, US Congressman. She was prominent during the (Grover) Cleveland administration from 1893-1897, when she served as vice-regent from her native State of Alabama for the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. The cause of her untimely death which occurred as a result of Melancholia, was by suicide. This was assumed to be triggered from her being confined to her bed, because of the spinal injury from the accident.

"She was fond of walking alone through the woods and fields of Mount
Vernon, and there conceived the idea of writing this book."
Molly Elliot Seawell, Preface to "The First American: His Homes and His Households"
"Mount Vernon Ladies Association is a non-profit organization that preserves and maintains the Mount Vernon estate originally owned by the family of President George Washington." Wikipedia
