The son of Joseph and Phebe (Getchell) Ridley, Joseph lived on Shaw's Ridge, Sanford, where he ran a large farm. He was noted for being the oldest member of Springvale's Free Baptist Church and the Lodge of Masons at the time of his passing. During the Civil War, he served with the 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry from 10 Sept 1862 until 17 July 1863. His obituary [Sanford Tribune and Advocate, 27 Mar 1930] says he was one of six remaining Civil War veterans living in York County.
