Re: The Simeon Sprague Family
Excerpt:
"When John Everet and his wife Sarah came to Canfield in 1802 they were accompanied by Simon Sprague who had married their only daughter, named Elizabeth, and settled on South Street, probably on the farm that yet goes by the name of the Sprague farm. Mr. Sprague and wife had a good old-fashioned Connecticut family of 12 (sic 13) children, a thing not unusual in those days of primeval innocency. Four of these were sons, named William, Ira, John and Augustine. The remaining eight were girls. Ira, as we already stated, came to Canfield in 1800 in company with Nathan Moore's surveying party, and remained here. Two of the daughters came in company with the Aaron Collar expedition of 1802. One of them married Ezra Hunt; the other Montgomery Hayden. In fact all eight girls found eligible husbands in due time. Certainly Belinda did so when she married Azariah Wetmore. The sons William and Ira, we learn, did not entangle themselves in the matrimonial yoke.
In March 1814, Ira was drafted for a six months' service in the war of 1812. By arrangement his brother William took his place. At Fort Gratiot, on Lake Huron, he sickened and died, attended and buried by a Canfield comrade, Captain Josiah Wood."
Note: War of 1812 – died in Gratiot, Wayne Co. MI
