She was 14 when she was cast in the title role, which was based on Vladimir Nabokov's novel about a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed with a 12-year-old girl. Born Suellyn Lyon, the youngest of five children, she was less than a year old when her father died. Her mother took the family to Dallas, then moved to Los Angeles where Lyon was able to pursue acting. She landed TV roles in "The Loretta Young Show" and "Dennis the Menace" before she obtained the lead in "Lolita," which won her the 1963 Golden Globe Award for the most promising female newcomer. Among her other films were "The Night of the Iguana," "7 Women," and "Tony Rome." Her television appearances included "Love, American Style," "Fantasy Island," "Police Story," and "Night Gallery." Lyon, whose final role was in the 1980 horror film "Alligator," died after years of declining health.
