Dorothy Bates Tilgner passed away on December 18, 2013. Dorothy was born on March 8, 1926 in Nebraska, the twelfth of 13 children. The family moved to Vale, Oregon and lived in the stone house for several years.

Dorothy helped cook and clean for her large family, and was always known for her excellent cooking skills. Dorothy worked for many years at Becker's Market, which later became G&B Market. She enjoyed friendships with many co-workers during her years of employment. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family.

Following the death of her first husband, Mel Bates in 1972, Dorothy married Tharrell Tilgner in 1975 and eventually settled in Richland, Oregon, where she lived for the past 25 years. Dorothy and Tharrell enjoyed traveling to Quartzsite, Arizona each winter. Dorothy loved being an Arizona "snowbird" because it allowed her to escape the cold winters of Richland.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mel Bates; her daughter, Cindy Pennington; and her grandson, Jason Keller.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Tharrell Tilgner; her children, Terry Kurata and Michael Bates, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held later this spring in Vale, Oregon (time and date to be announced).

For those who wish to make a memorial donation in memory of Dorothy, the family suggests the Eagle Valley Ambulance or the Eagle Valley EMT Training Fund through Tami's Pine Valley Funeral Home, PO Box 543 Halfway, OR 97834.
