Harriet lived during the Westward Expansion. She was born in Saline County, Illinois to Mark Stricklin and Emaline Davis. She was their second child and her mother died soon after. Her father married her mother's sister and they had five more children, the youngest being a son.

Harriet married John Washington Carson, also of Saline County, in Missouri in 1870 and had two sons in Indian Territory and he died soon after. In 1880, Harriet was living with her boys with her widowed father in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She married Charles Leslie Frederick about that time and had a son in New Mexico and the last in Holbrook, AZ where she died soon after. At the age of 28, she'd born four sons, had her mother and step-mother die, as well as her first husband.

Her boys were Leonodis Young Carson (1873 - 1911), Albert Eugene Carson (1875 - 1942), Walter Jesse Frederick (1881 - 1954), and George Edward Frederick (1882 - 1953). Her youngest and oldest sons never married but Albert had four daughters and a son in Arizona, and Walter had five sons and a daughter in California.
