Albert Eugene "Kit" Carson
Eugene "Kit" Carson, born in 1874 or 1875, moved to Globe about the turn of the century to join his brother, Lee Carson, who already lived here.
Eugene married Amanda Mae Henderson on July 3, 1902, in Globe. She had come to Arizona in 1900 at the age of 13, with her family, the John William and Emma Bass Hendersons. After their marriage, Kit ran a butcher shop and helped in a grocery store in Troy. Troy was a small mining camp west of Dripping Springs Wash on the road to Kelvin. It was mostly a community of tents. The mine closed in 1903.
It was after the birth of their first daughter, Katie, that Kit and Amanda moved to the site of the Roosevelt Dam construction. He helped with the construction until he was asked to operate a sawmill on Government Flats in the Sierra Ancha Mountains. The lumber cut at the mill was hauled by wagon to a spot on the Salt River and then floated down to the dam site.
The family moved to Reynolds Creek in the Sierra Anchas and Kit operated a sawmill there. The second daughter, Edna, was born there.
It was during this period that Amanda Carson got the shock of her life. She heard a knock at the door one day and when she opened it, she saw several Indians. They forced their way into the house, and she grabbed the children and ran out the back yelling, "Indians, Indians." The men heard her and came running from the mill. They discovered the Indians were merely very cold and wanted to get warm by the fire.
When the girls were ready for school, the family moved to Globe and purchased a home on the highway south of Globe about a quarter of a mile from the South bend Bridge over Pinal Creek. Velma, Eugene, and Mildred were born in Globe.
Mr. Carson was a refrigerator repairman for many years in the Globe-Miami area, then took a job as supervisor of the repair force for the Globe Public School System, a job he held until his death.
The children married local sweethearts. After graduation from UofA, Katie taught in Globe High School from 1925-1928. In 1928, Katie and Andy Tolson were married and moved to Tucson. Velma and Lloyd Edmonson married in 1927. Lloyd worked for International Smelter in Miami.
Eugene and Winnie Ryden of Miami married and still live in Lower Miami and Roosevelt Lake Estates. Mildred married Richard Westerfield and they live on the Ariviapa Wash south of Winkelman. Edna moved to Tucson in 1933 and held a position with the M M Sundt Construction Company until she retired in 1972.
Members of the Carson family still living are Velma, Eugene, Edna and Mildred.
--Clipping likely from a ~1980 history of Gila County, Arizona. Done between 1973 and 1983 (Katie and Velma's deaths).
