FORMER RESIDENT'S SON DIES OF RARE DISEASE

Conducted here Wednesday by Rev. Walter A. Riske of the Immaculate Conception Church for Jerry Franklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Franklin of Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Franklin is the former Madge Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hall of New Madrid.

Following is an article from the Memphis Commercial about the death of the boy.

There are four tiny mounds in a row in Evergreen Cemetery on Highway 61 near New Madrid. Wednesday a new little grave was added —that of little Jerry Franklin, 5, who died at 4:45 at Methodist Hospital after a long seige with a little known ailment, believed to be Fibrocystic Disease of the lungs and pancreas. Franklin is the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Franklin of 2186 Filmore, to die in early childhood. They have two other boys one, 17 and another 12, and their eighth child and only girl, 1 year old Mary Laura Franklin. Jerry had been in Methodist Hospital since Nov. 28 except for two weeks when he was home at 22 days. Billy and Carl died in New Madrid where the family lived before moving to Memphis in 1937. Bobby Gene, now 12, also apparently escaped the disease. Then came Jack who died in Memphis in 1943 and on whom an autopsy was performed, and who lived only four months and two days. Johnny died in 1945 after only 35 days of life.
