Rev. Bunyan Spencer, secretary and former acting president of Denison University, was found dead in bed at his home in Granville Sunday by his daughter Gladys, a member of the staff of Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware. Rev Spencer spent part of his time at his home in Granville and was last seen there alive and in his usual health last Tuesday, but he had apparently been dead for several days when his daughter came home Sunday.
Rev. Spencer was 77 years old and was the last of the large family of children reared by Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Spencer at Adamsville. He graduated from Denison University more than 60 years ago and served in many Baptist pastorates and educational institutions throughout his long life. He leaves two sons [William and Herman]and three daughters [this is incorrect; he was survived by four daughters--Gwladys, Cornelia, Eudora, and Emilie]. His wife who was Miss Emily Gear, of Marietta, passed away years ago.
Rev. Spencer was a fine scholar and a man of the highest character and ideals. He was respected by everyone who knew him. His grandfather, William Spencer, was the first pastor of the Baptist church at Adamsville. He had many relatives and friends in Zanesville and Muskingum county and frequently occupied local pulpits while visiting in this county.
Rev. Spencer was an uncle of Mrs. Harry Matchett, Mrs. Frank Williams and Walter Saffle, all residents of the Adamsville vicinity.
Burial was made in Granville Monday afternoon.
Appeared in the Adamsville Register, 10 Jul 1932.
