The daughter of Edmund Ruffin and Mary Cook Smith Ruffin, she was the wife of Edward Cunningham Harrison. She was Edward's second wife and he her second husband, the first being William Willcox. Her grandfather was Edmund Ruffin Sr., the famed wealthy Virginia planter and slaveholder who in the 1850s was a political activist known as one of the Fire-Eaters. He was credited as firing the first shot of the Civil War at Fort Sumter.
