Ed was born on November 7, 1931, in Borden Springs, Alabama, to the late James and Bertha Rutherford Holland. He was one of eight children. He joined the Army at an early age and received an honorable discharge. On February 3, 1955, he married Betty Jo Layne. They raised their two children in addition to numerous siblings. They were married for 63 years before she passed away.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; daughter, Glenda; son, Buster; parents, James and Bertha; brothers, Frank and James; and sisters, Mable, Eva, Thelma and Dessie.
He is survived by his daughter, Janice Maddox; brother, Robert Holland (LaQuita); grandchildren, Robyn Camp (Samuel), Tiffany Nicholson (Jason), and Logan Maddox (Laura); great-grandchildren, Erin Jimenez (Lucas), Brody Nicholson (Ashtin), Ayden Jimenez, Marley Anderson and Laynie McFry.
Ed lived a long life with a passion for fishing and gardening. His favorite pastime was to watch the news and Smokey and The Bandit. He was known for his ability to never meet a stranger, his wonderful sense of humor, and his generosity. He enjoyed helping others by giving the food he grew to friends and family.

A memorial service for Mr. William Edward Holland, Sr. will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at two o’clock in the afternoon in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. All friends and family are welcome.
