John H. Kelly, Sr., 81, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away in the presence of loved ones at his side on July 25, 2007 after a courageous and long struggle with cancer.

He was born on November 2, 1925 in Corpus Christi to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick William Kelly, Sr. He was raised in Comstock, Texas on the family ranch. Upon graduating from Notre Dame University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, John returned to Comstock to pursue ranching: a passion that ran through his family. His grandparents were Irish pioneers that settled land in the Comstock and Corpus Christi area.

He married Mary Joyce Goodwin on June 16, 1951 in George West, Texas. The couple lived in Comstock until they moved to Corpus Christi in 1955 to run the family farm. He farmed grain, cotton, and corn in the Coastal Bend area for 44 years. He was among the founding parishioners of St. Pius X Catholic Church, a member of the Alhambra Catholic Men's Charity Organization, and a member of the Lions Club. He was a co-owner of Coastal Bend Fertilizer and Implement, a long time President of Coastal Bend Gin Company which later became Coastal Bend Co-Op Gin, where he served as president until his retirement from farming in 1999. He served on numerous advisory boards for banking, lending, and agricultural organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Joyce Goodwin Kelly; son, James Patrick Kelly of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughter, Mary Ann Kelly of Corpus Christi; daughter, Kathleen Joyce Kelly Horne (Patrick) of Corpus Christi; daughter, Eileen Marie Kelly Stryker (Michael) of San Antonio, Texas; son, John Harold Kelly, Jr. (Margaret) of Bishop, Texas; eight grandchildren: Rachel Joyce Horne Rogers (Rick), Patrick J. Horne, Jr., Kathleen Kelly Horne, Elizabeth Ann Horne, Thomas Michael Stryker, Michelle Marie Stryker, Kacie Marie Kelly, Jessica Erin Kelly; brother, Patrick William Kelly, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Betty Kelly Zuberbueler of Comstock, Texas; sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Pedrotti Kelly; and nieces, nephews, and cousins too numerous to name.

He will be remembered for his quiet and gentle love, clever, witty sense of humor, and lively blue eyes.

During the 1946 National Championship football season, John Harold served as a manager for the Notre Dame football team under Coach Frank W. Leahy. His strong love and dedication for the Fighting Irish continued throughout his life.

A rosary and mass were held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Jul 26 & 27. An additional rosary was held at the Goodwin Ranch on the evening of Jul 27. A funeral mass was celebrated Jul 28 at St. George's Catholic Church in George West, Texas. Interment followed at the Gussetville Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Patrick Jefferson Horne, Jr., Thomas Michael Stryker, Robert Hender Kelly, Jr., Andrew E. Wueste, James Goodwin Wueste, and Patrick Kelly Zuberbueler.
