Martha was sent to Canada by Annie Macpherson. She sailed from Liverpool on the ship Vancouver, arriving at Quebec on 29 April 1888. She was afterwards sent to the Marchmont Home in Belleville, Ontario. By April 1891, she was living with Joseph Liberty and Elizabeth Coons, along with their children. In the 1891 Census of Canada, she was listed as their adopted daughter.
She gave birth to an illegitimate son, Bertram Stanley Liberty, on 1 Jun 1895. The child's father was her adoptive brother, Simeon Liberty. Bertram was raised by Joseph and Ellen Liberty, his grandparents, and all documents (apart from his birth register) list him as a son of Joseph and Ellen.
On 12 November 1907, Martha married John B. McQuaig, who was over 30 years her senior. Martha was a dressmaker at the time of her marriage. Once again, Joseph and Elizabeth Liberty were listed as her adopted parents. Martha and John had no children and remained married until his death in 1920.
Martha's place of burial was stated as Maple Ridge Cemetery on her death record. She does not appear to have a marker in the cemetery and it is assumed that she is buried with her husband and his first wife, or with her adoptive parents, Joseph Liberty and Ellen Coons.
