Stage and film actress. Born Margarethe Schippang, she made her stage debut in 1912 in Bad Freienwalde. She made her film debut in 1918, and would go on to become a leading lady throughout the silent film era in Weimar Germany. She is possibly best recalled internationally for her role as the vengeful Kriemhild in director Fritz Lang's two silent fantasy films, "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried" and "Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge." She transitioned to sound films with ease and would go on to appear as a popular character actress from the 1930s until her retirement from the industry in 1960. For her contribution to German cinema, she was awarded the Filmband in Gold.
