He spent his early life in the McGraw community and later lived at Mt Hope. He taught school as a young man and later was a railroad telegraph operator. He had also worked as a head sawyer in various mills in this region. His first wife was Miss Julia Nollinger and after her death he married Mrs Lottie Peiffer in 1910. She died in 1930. He leaves a daughter by the first marriage, Mrs Fred Gage of Essexville, Mich; a step-daughter, Mrs Litzinger; a stepson, Clayton Peiffer, also of Enterprise; four grandchildren; three brothers: Charles Ayling of Detroit, Andrew and Guy Ayling of Oklahoma, and one sister, Mrs Benjamin Davis of Jamestown, NY.
