In 1831, the family migrated to Illinois. In that year, the brothers John and Joseph Naper (founders of Naperville IL) sailed their vessel the "Telegraph" to Chicago, and the Potters were almost certainly among the passengers. John Naper was the husband of Eliza's daughter Betsey. At that time, Chicago had only three log cabins.
Chester, Eliza and their family settled in Warren Co. IL, and lived out their lives there. Chester built the grist mill, for which he made burrs from local stone. These burrs were only 12", and despite their small size, they ground grain for miles around. Chester died in 1851, and Eliza remarried in 1862 to William M. McGreenwood.
