The obituary of Daniel Hurd states that he was born in Mayfield, Maine, a son of Captain John Heard of the state militia. Daniel's father died in 1832 and Daniel worked on farms and in the cotton mill at Great Falls, New Hampshire. He married in 1839 to Rosetta M. Hill. He worked at a number of jobs, including for the Warren Aldrich Co., a manufacturer of iron working machinery. His work sent him to Chicago and eventually to Marseilles, where he became the superintendent of the Marseilles Land and Water Power Company. He was president of the Marseilles Cold Water Army, a temperance society, for about 20 years. Wherever he lived, Daniel Hurd was active in the Baptist Church, Sunday School, and mission work. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church and was often called "Deacon Daniel." He died at his home on "Hurd's" bluff in Marseilles, aged 87 years, 3 months, and 28 days. His wife Rosetta and son Charles A. Hurd survived him.
