While an engineer with Jeffery Mining and Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Dierdorff gained fame with his development of densly packed insulation used to suppress sparking around electric motor housings. This insulation allowed for the first safe electric seam cutting tool in underground mining. Dierdorff is also noted for his development of reliable electrical power systems used to deliver electricity to miners underground.
In all, Dierdorff received over thirty-five patents from USPO between 1883 and 1911.
Born in Seville, in Medina County, H. Beecher Dierdorf came to Columbus with his family when he was a young man. He started at Jeffery Mining Co. as an unskilled laborer, quickly rising through the company on his self taught engineering skills. He retired from Jeffery as Plant Superintendent.
Married twice. First wife Charlotte Miller died in 1918 in Columbus Ohio. Married November 1920 to Mrs. Hattie Monnette, nee Jones, of Marion County Ohio. The couple made their home on Waltham Road in Upper Arlington, Ohio until his death in 1935, and wintered in Fort Myers.
Children: William, Henry, Percy, Myrta, and Irving. Stepfather to I.R. Monnette of Marion Ohio.
Known to all by his middle name of Beecher. The naming tradition skipped his son, but his grandson and great-grandson were named Henry Beecher Dierdorff for him, they both used Beecher as their preferred names.
