Judith “Judy” Carling Althans, 82, passed away peacefully on February 8th in Williamsburg, VA while being visited and comforted by family members.

Judy was born in New Jersey, the first of two children of the late Jane (Willower) and Elmer Clifford Carling. She attended the College of William & Mary where she met her husband, Bill. Their first date led to wedded bliss and a lifetime of total adoration for each other. Their 64 years together included spontaneity, adventure and the blessings of their three children! With a huge zest for life, travel was always on their agenda no matter the season. From surf to snow…as long as it included the beach and the mountains and everything in between!! Getaways were plentiful with Bill’s passion for general aviation, and when they flew together, Judy was his co-pilot. Amazingly, she learned how to fly, too!

Besides her love of learning, Judy’s compassionate heart was one of her most precious qualities. Her infectious smile brightened the lives of all who saw it. She always let her own light shine whether it was on the tennis courts, ski slopes or with a paint brush in her hand! “An artist is someone with the gift to light up a dark room.” She carried this gift with her always, appropriately so, since Art was her college major. “Blossom and grow forever Edelweiss!”

Judy was preceded by her daughter, Kimberly Althans Thomas. Survivors include her husband, William Carl Althans, Sr.; son, William Carl Althans, Jr. (Diane); daughter, Suzanne Althans Baldrick (Stephen); son-in-law, Reid Lambert Thomas; brother, James Richard Carling (Katharine); grandchildren, William James Althans, Carl William Althans, Jordan William Baldrick, Andrew Stephen Baldrick, Carling Hannah Baldrick, Samuel Reid Thomas, and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held to honor her spirit at The River Road South Cemetery in Gates Mills, OH in late Spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Stephen Lutheran Church 612 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185 or Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center at give.roswellpark.org.
