William was the only son and middle child of London solicitor William Woods Temple and Jane Kirton. He had three sisters who remained in London all their lives and a younger sister who immigrated to Los Angeles, California. William worked in the London and Westminster Bank as a clerk and accountant. He never married. Six months after his mother died he immigrated to Australia arriving May 18 1899, but was unable to find work in a bank there. He lived at the Miners Arms Hotel in Perth for one month and died as a pauper by a self inflicted gunshot to the head on June 23. His family never heard from him after he left for Australia and were unaware of his tragic death for several years. His name is engraved on the family headstone in his memory in the Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery in London England. Buried in the Karrakatta Cemetery, he was incorrectly listed in the cemetery burial records as William Wedd Temple. This was finally corrected in October of 2020 to William Webb Temple, and his descendants notified of the correction.
